The South Abington Township Police Department is a full-time municipal police agency.  The Department provides comprehensive police services to a population of over approximately 9,500 residents in addition to contracting police services to neighboring  Newton Township and Ransom Township with an additional population of over 6,000 residents.

The SATPD currently employs 10 full-time and 6 part-time officers, as well as a civilian employee. The Department is widely recognized for its emphasis on providing professional police service, and utilizes the latest developments in computer technology and law enforcement equipment.  Specialized services provided by the SATPD include a summer bicycle unit and a full-time School Resource Officer located within the Abington Heights High School.  Additionally, members of the SATPD serve with the Lackawanna County Drug Task Force and Lackawanna County SWAT Team.  All members receive updated training on a regular basis.

Police calls are handled through the Lackawanna County Communications Center.  When dialing 911 for emergencies or 342-9111 for non-emergencies, it is imperative that you inform the dispatcher that you reside in South Abington Township.  If you are continuing to use Clarks Summit for your mailing address, this will get you mail only.  All emergency services are provided by South Abington Township.

The Department operates 24 hours a day.  Full time staff are present from 8 AM through 4 PM, Monday through Friday.  The telephone number for direct access is 570-587-8715.  The police fax number is 570-586-4342.

South Abington Township Police Department, along with the Lackawanna County District Attorney’s Office, sponsors a Prescription Drug Drop Off Box, located in the Township Building’s lobby at 104 Shady Lane Road, Chinchilla.
