The Friends of Shady Lane Cemetery, a nonprofit corporation, will hold its first Community Work Day at the cemetery on Saturday, April 23, from 9:00 to noon. The cemetery is located on Shady Lane Road in Chinchilla. Any interested person is invited to join us for this important community service project. Children and teens are welcome to participate with their parents. All volunteers should bring work gloves and protective clothing (against ticks, thorns, poison ivy, etc.). If available, volunteers should bring trash bags, string trimmers, hand trimmers, loppers, rakes, lawn mowers, chain saws, and all associated safety equipment.

The Friends of Shady Lane does not own the cemetery. We assume no liability for injury to person or property of those who visit or volunteer at the cemetery, which is not covered by liability insurance. Therefore, please understand that if you participate in our efforts, you voluntarily assume the risk of any personal injury or property damage you might suffer. We recommend that all volunteers work in groups of two or more and have a phone available in case of injury. Be aware that the cemetery features rocky soil, slopes, holes, hidden gravestones, poison ivy, thick brush, and other hazards common to the outdoors.

Our corporation was founded in January, 2022, to address the deterioration and lack of maintenance of Shady Lane Cemetery, which has been abandoned by the owner for well over a decade. Our mission is to preserve and maintain the cemetery as a beautiful green space for the community instead of a nuisance and a danger. We are also documenting local history and educating the public about the lives of those buried at Shady Lane. Additional work days will be held on May 21, June 25, July 23, August 27, and September 24.
