South Abington Township was created in 1867 when the larger Abington region was split into north and south parcels. It is the largest municipality in “The Abingtons”, and third largest in Lackawanna County. The Township will be celebrating its 150th Anniversary in 2017.
The boroughs of Clarks Summit and Clarks Green (which are surrounded by South Abington) were later carved out of this southern region of the Abingtons; thus the Township’s slogan, “Gateway to the Abingtons”.
